I ordered this machine when I was on a business trip and never got a chance to fully test all of the ports and connections on this machine.
When I got home and wanted to use the DisplayPort to connect to my monitor, I realized that ASUS had shipped me a machine with an issue. I thought no problem, I am an IT geek, I can figure this out.
I have attempted to reload all the drivers that pertain to the two Video Cards on my B43J machine. The one thing holding me back is that the ASUS website does not actually have the Intel Driver available for my model of Laptop on their website. I checked the Intel Website, and they detect that I have and ASUS machine and advise that ASUS has customized this driver for use on this machine. Since my laptop uses the Intel Driver for low power consumption and the ATI driver for when it is plugged in, this sounds very reasonable.
So I' broke down and called the ASUS customer support. On both occasions I have got an agent in training who knows very little about computers and who likely has only been on the ASUS customer support site for less than 10 minutes. On the first call, I was asked to mail in my laptop for service and best case scenario they would have it fixed and likely re-loaded with the factory software in two weeks.
While I think the build quality of the case and hardware is 100 times better than the Dell that I just passed off to the in-laws, I miss the support that Dell has to offer. What good is a computer that has a video display that supports some large high-res monitors if you can't actually hook it up to a monitor?

This case does exactly what I expected it to do. I have dropped my Bold several times on hard surfaces...not a scratch or dent anywhere. I like the freedom of placing the phone in my pocket...a holster is useless for me since I work outdoors (landscape designer) and the holster was getting hung on everything.

ASUS B43J-B1B 14-Inch Business Laptop - Black Review

ASUS B43J-B1B 14-Inch Business Laptop - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this laptop to use as a dedicated software development machine and couldn't be happier.
Everything about this laptop seems oriented toward function rather than style. The performance seems up to the quality specs of the individual components, and there is certainly nothing flimsy or cheap about the look and feel. There is no keyboard flex at all, and the feel of the keys suits me just fine.
I think this laptop was designed through and through as a business machine. Not only does it have a "business" look to it, reminding me of the old-school IBM laptops favored by my former employer, but has other business friendly features.
The hard drive comes partitioned with the C: drive for the OS (about 75G) and the rest for data storage. Very smart. It also has various security features that businesses love: antivirus, encryption, fingerprint reader.
Don't get the impression this laptop is a business-only machine. Savvy computer users love all these "business" features. You should care as much about protecting your personal data as business care about protecting theirs, and this laptop is eager to oblige out of the box.
What this machine is not: fashionable is a cosmetic way. It is not small, thin, or light. It doesn't have a lighted logo, stylish graphic on the case, or other eye-candy bling that will impress friends and strangers. In fact, airport and coffee shop thieves will be looking for targets elsewhere.
This is one design element that doesn't make sense. With the performance of this laptop, and the capabilities of the dedicated graphics, it would make an outstanding Photoshop computer. Unfortunately, I don't see the stylish, graphic designer types going for this type of laptop. Why put all this capability into a machine that will get overlooked by most of a large group of potential buyers?
There several nice touches that don't get talked about in reviews of this laptop, such as the manual on/off switch for the built-in camera and the caps-lock light positioned right next to the caps-lock key.
I don't know yet what the battery life is like, but I suspect it might disappoint some people. It is not an issue for me, since over 95% of the time I will be using this as a desktop replacement PC (wall power and hard-wired networking). The battery life certainly is sufficient for the couple of hour stretches in airports here and there.
This laptop is one zippy machine. The ExpressCard slot and SD slot come in very handy, too.
Here are the out of box Windows Experience numbers for my specific copy of this laptop:
Processor: 4.3
Memory: 5.9
Graphics: 5.1
Gaming Graphics: 6.3
Primary Hard Disk: 5.9
The processor score seemed low, so I disabled virtualization (used for the "instant-on" functionality).
I reran the experience index and the Processor score moved to 7.0.
Since this is a development laptop running a database server, web server, and development environment, I decided to upgrade the memory to 8GB and go to an Ocz 240GB SSD for the primary drive.
The current Experience numbers are:
Processor: 7.0
Memory: 7.0
Graphics: 5.1
Gaming Graphics: 6.3
Primary Hard Disk: 7.7
I don't know why the desktop aero graphics scores are so low, but maybe because I've disabled most areo features. It might also be using the built-in Intel graphics instead of the ATI graphics. In any case, the desktop graphics on this machine SCREAM.
For grins I added a 48GB ExpressCard drive for the windows paging file, windows temp files, and logs to save wear on the expensive SSD. Grins-a-plenty.
Out of the box, this is an exceptional machine for doing development work. My upgrades push the capabilities to the extreme, making it pretty much future-proof.
My only gripe whatsoever is an occasionally touchy "w" key. Every so often the "w" doesn't register on the first press. If I can't fix it using compressed air, I may have to look into using the Asus support.

Laptop works well. One thing I was looking for in a laptop was a matte screen. I did not want glossy, too much glare/reflections. So far, the laptop has worked well. Windows 7 Professional OS is the one to have, the home version lacks a lot of networking functions that I have only discovered recently with this laptop. I'll probably be changing my home computers over to professional now. I like the switchable graphics feature, gives you the extra graphics power if you need it. The laptop runs quiet and cool even under a strong workload.
The only con I would see to the laptop would be 2gb ram that came with it. I would like to have seen 4gb. This is a very easy/cheap upgrade to do that I will probably do on my own soon.
Overall, glad I purchased the unit.

Bose Wave Radio - Clock radio - graphite gray Review

Bose Wave Radio - Clock radio - graphite gray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bose is a true case study in Marketing over Engineering. The Wave Radio proves it. This radio uses a tuned port to accent a certain part of the bass region.
The problem is that the port seem to make a characture of the bass. Bommy in some spots and thin in others. I think the tube is an attempt to compensate for some small / weak drivers.
After a while this radio started to sound annoying to me. I have had this problem before with another piece of Bose equipment. (A factory car stereo)
For far less money check out the Tivoli model 1 or Model 2. These little radios are MUCH cheaper than the Bose and they sound much better. They also take up less table space and look nicer.
Bose is very famous. They have spent a lot of money to convinve people they are an "audiophile" brand. True audiophiles who hear the Tivoli will see that there is NO comparision. Thanks goodness I was able to return the Wave radio!
I gave this 3 stars. It does sound better than most small radios. However, it is over priced and you can do better for less. Also, it takes up a lot of dresser space.

Cambridge SoundWorks Model Six Bookshelf Speaker - Pair Review

Cambridge SoundWorks Model Six Bookshelf Speaker - Pair
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was mostly nostalgia that prompted me to get these speakers for my bedroom--that and a significant price decrease from an already very low price. The sound reminded me instantly of the original Advent speaker. That speaker was the first speaker I fell in love with. Eventually I thought its sound was too soft and started on a long journey through various speakers, ending with the Epos 22. Almost all of the intervening speakers were ported. Kloss was one of the inventors of the infinite baffle and acoustic suspension, and the sound is very American. I position these on a 90 degree angle (correct for reproduction of Blumlein stereo recordings) close to a corner, with grills removed, perched on top of 2 sets of old speakers. The sound makes me smile each time I play a CD (only classical music). Do not expect these speakers to fill very large spaces, but for a smaller room at moderate sound pressure, you cannot really do better at any price. Easy to drive--my bedroom amp is less than 20W per channel and has no problem. The NAD315/316 can drive the speakers to high sound pressures. Kloss is gone but Creative Labs (Singapore) is a high-quality outfit, and I trust they will keep making these speakers for a long time.

This is a nice enough product; stylish, holds phone horizontally, heavier than you'd expect with a non-skid bottom. Problem is, that's all it is. There is no charger included as I had assumed. You either have to use the charger or the USB charging/sync cable that came with your phone. I wanted a second charger for my desk so I could keep the one that came with the phone in my briefcase or suitcase. Not sure it's pretty enough to justify almost $30 with shipping.

I have a 2010 KIA SOul with the upgraded radio. It sounds pretty good but wanted more Bass. I upgraded the head unit to Pioneer AVH-P3200BT. But anytime you do this you need to use a 3rd party way to use the steering wheel controls. First all you need to know the included instructions are terrible. Just go to www.pac-audio.com/ to get the instructions for your specific model. I did this and still was unsure so Contacted support and they were very helpful. The programming took a couple of tries to get it right. The only thing that would make it better would be the exact controls I had before. It works a little different but it is a limitation of the head unit not the pac device. The Blue Tooth portion works great.

Polk Audio DB6501 6.5-Inch 2-Way Component System (Pair, Silver) Review

Polk Audio DB6501 6.5-Inch 2-Way Component System (Pair, Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
About 3 months ago, I decided that I'd had enough of my factory car speakers in my 2008 Toyota Prius. I haven't replaced speakers in my cars for years so I didn't want to do the whole rewiring/amp/equalizer/etc deal. I simply wanted to replace the stock speakers with better ones. After a couple of weeks of research, I chose these over Boston Acoustics, Pioneer and Infinity because of the sensitivity rating and price.
Before I get on with how great these are, let me explain how bad the old ones were. The stock speakers suffered bad "motorboating"...you know, when a bass heavy piece of music causes the speakers to make a fluttering sound like a motorboat engine. This was a daily occurence, even with the base kicked down two pips. I also had to kick the treble up two pips. Still, the treble was severe. Songs like Alanis Morisette's "Citizen of the Planet" were almost impossible to listen to because the lows were too quiet and the parts where the bass kicked in overpowered the speakers immediately. Once I pulled the stock speakers out, it was evident why they sounded so terrible. The magnets on them were slightly less than an inch in diameter and I couldn't find anything that would actually stick to them.
okay, back to the polk audio's. Installation went pretty easy. I did have to make my own mounting brackets from mdf to fit in the huge holes that Toyota has in it's doors. The tweeters fit nicely in the same place as the stock tweeters were. After the install, I was able to put the treble and bass back to flat. Initially, the bass seemed to be a little week and I was concerned that I would have to put an amp in to correct it. After about a month though, it seemed like the speakers started to loosen up. Now, the sound is great. I know I don't need an amp, at least not with this radio. I'm enjoying hearing new things in my music that I'd not heard before because the previous speakers couldn't reproduce it. One note of caution though....as a regular podcast listener, I happened to be listening to a podcast that, at one point, had a car horn honk. It sounded realistic enough that it caused me to swerve to avoid the imaginary car that was approaching on the right! :)
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these speakers to anyone!

Polk's new 2007 db Series is better than ever with superior looks and even better sound--at prices that make high performance affordable to everyone. The db6501 is a 6.5-inch two-way component system that works well in OEM factory systems, as well as with high-powered aftermarket head units and component power amps.

Marine Certified Polk db Series speakers are built tough to withstand the toughest environments so they are perfect for use in boats of all types. That's why Correct Craft offers Polk Audio speakers in their award-winning Nautiques ski and wakeboarding boats.
Tweeters The 25mm liquid-cooled silk/polymer composite dome tweeter with neodymium magnet provide clear, detailed highs.
Flush and surface mount swivel cups allow placement flexibility for soundstage optimization in your vehicle.
Mid/Woofers The 6.5-inch woofers feature a dynamic balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone, which is stiff yet lightweight, for big sound with little distortion. The butyl rubber surround won't fall apart under the stress of extreme temperatures, sunlight or time, for years of the great Polk sound.
The woofer's low-mass, two-layer 25mm Kapton voice coil former ensures high power handling and great reliability. Although Katpon handles plenty of heat, a pole plate heat sink promotes better heat dissipation.
A flat spider provides faster, longer excursion linear motion, and the flexible woven leads are sewn directly into Spider for greater reliability.
Finally, the backbone--a rock solid, acoustically inert stamped steel basket finished in rustproof Gun Metal Gray.
Installation The supplied adaptor rings enable the db6501 to fit both 6-1/2-inch and 6-3/4-inch applications, ensuring an easy fit in everything from domestics to imports including VWs and Audis, BMWs and other European imports.
The tough-looking ABS Grilles are computer optimized and based on exclusive MOMO designs, and stainless steel mounting hardware is included.
Crossover The 2nd-order Butterworth outboard crossover helps get you component system sound at a coaxial price. Electronic tweeter protection keeps your tweeters from accidental abuse for reliable, high-output sound, and the vented crossover housing gives you a choice of hidden wire channels for easier, more professional-looking installs.

Tivoli Audio Model Two AM/FM Table Radio with Stereo Speaker, Cherry/Metallic Taupe Review

Tivoli Audio Model Two AM/FM Table Radio with Stereo Speaker, Cherry/Metallic Taupe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off - the radio is beautifully simple, and sounds remarkably good for what it is. I have really enjoyed listening to it, and it's total lack of any "harsh edges" means you can listen for hours. It also looks just fantastic, and is quite compact.
But there are a few minor issues. As others have mentioned, the tuning dial is rather difficult to see in low light due to inadquate contrast between the brown background and gray numbers. That's not that big a deal, but it's a slight annoyance.
Reception on FM is at least as good as any component tuner that I have tried, maybe better, even with the little monopole antenna supplied, or even with nothing/internal antennna. With a real external antenna, I'm quite sure that if the station was there, you'd hear it.
Reception on AM, however, is nothing to write home about, and with no external antenna input it's a little difficult to correct. I got a Terk AM Advantage loop antenna and used it in "inductive coupling" mode, and that helps somewhat. But some stations are still very marginal. I'm close to opening it up and adding an external antenna input. I am in the process of making a very large loop antenna (hiding it by building it into a picture frame!) and that should solve it. But I suspect even a simple antenna, directly feeding the radio, would work better.
Tuning is like the good old days, of course - turn the dial until you hear it best. It also has the modern equivalent of the "tuning neon lamp" on old tube tuners - an LED that indicates "tune". Analog is the right way to go.The knob is geared down 5:1 so you can really move it without overdoing it. But I have noticed that sometimes the LED is "rate-sensitive". If you turn the knob quickly, you can really get it bright, but if you turn it slow, you can never get it as bright no matter what you do. Must be AC-coupled. This is just a minor irritation. A slightly more difficult issue is that there seems to be a lot of "slop" in the gear mechanism. Turn it one way until you go past peak, then back, and it takes a fair amount of turning the opposite way until it moves at all. It *feels* great.
I have been running it back-to-back with my real stereo, and of course it has some limitations. What do you expect for $159 and 3-inch speakers? My real system is probably 20-30 times the cost. Somewhat surprisingly, the biggest practical limitations seem to be on the high frequency end. The low end, even without the accessory subwoofer, seems plenty good enough for real music. It's very slightly boomy at the very bottom of it's range, but nothing overly objectionable. I can't imagine needing the subwoofer.
You definitely give up something on the high end, however, This can actually be good in some cases - listing to the local jazz station on a real hi-fi reveals the limitations of old reel-to-reel recording from the 50's in the form of tape hiss. It can really get on your nerves after a while. The Tivoli filters this out and has a very listenable, if not perfectly accurate, sound. There are no tone controls, but that's not a problem, and most high-end hi-fi preamps don't have tone controls, either. It gets more than loud enough, BTW.
The case (cherry wood) is beautifully made and really adds to the "retro" look. The whole system has a very solid and substantial feel.
It's not obvious, but there's are several external line-level inputs with which you can add external sources. For example, you can use the radio as your computer speaker, and it will mix the radio with the computer sounds. Or us the auxiliary input and add something else - like a portable CD player.
I have listened extensively to the Bose Wave (the obvious competitor for expensive table radios), and there's NO comparison in terms of sound quality. The Tivoli is MUCH better, in my opinion. Given that it's also far less expensive, if that's the alternative, buy two Tivolis.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase. If it had a way to add an external AM antenna, it would be close to perfect.

The Tivoli Henry Kloss Model Two Radio with companion speaker, the Tivoli Model Subwoofer and the Tivoli Model CD are designed to be used together as part of a complete compact stereo system but are sold separately from each other.
All the elements of the component system have classic styling that makes Tivoli products so distinctive. Simplicity and elegance are engineered into all three components and, for the most part, we came away impressed with what this little system could do in terms of sound quality, as well as its ease of use. It's worth noting here that all three components sport separate ports for AC and DC power, making them a great choice for boating or RV use.
Henry Kloss Model Two The Model Two serves as the base unit for the Tivoli component system. It is very similar to the Model Three clock radio, without the alarm clock section. Like other Tivoli radios, the Model Two is just over 8 inches wide, 4.5 inches high, and 5.25 inches deep--about the size of a toaster turned on its side. The unit also ships with a companion speaker which, unlike the monaural Henry Kloss Model One, gives the system full stereo separation.
The Model Two has a single rotary dial that handles tuning for both AM and FM stations. The dial is designed to move between stations at a speed that's a bit slower than the speed at which the user turns the knob--a five-to-one ratio, to be exact. This ratio dialing technique makes it far easier to tune stations accurately and quickly. It's a nice touch that sets the unit apart from other desktop radios. The tuner band selection and volume dials are easy to control, and they're well designed for hands of all sizes. A small LED power indicator, as well as an LED that helps determine signal strength, are positioned between the dials. We did have one gripe about the Model Two controls, though--the same gripe we had about the Model Three. Unlike the high-contrast labeling we found on the Platinum Series Model One radio, the Model Two's blue-gray lettering atop a taupe background is difficult to read, especially in low-light situations.
The Model Two's 3-inch driver is housed next to the tuning dial and is protected by a handsome metal speaker cover. The companion speaker contains the same driver in a form factor that is the same size and construction as the Model Two's main unit. A 15-foot RCA speaker cord attached to the companion speaker allows you to set the speakers well apart in a room--great for getting optimal stereo separation. There's a small balance dial on the rear of the main unit as well as a mono-stereo switch.
A coaxial antenna jack for the included FM antenna wire is provided, although the Model Two also has an internal FM antenna. Tivoli recommends using the supplied external antenna for tricky tuning in locales with a lot of closely spaced stations. There's a handy switch for alternating between the internal and external antennae, as well. A standard 3.5-millimeter headphone jack is also provided, as is a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary line-in port for plugging in the Model CD. For the really techno-savvy, there's also a 3.5-millimeter mixing input that permits audio from your computer to be mixed in with the radio. A preamp-out jack is provided for the Model Subwoofer, and if you want to use the Model Two as a component tuner--not a bad idea given the overall quality and accuracy of the tuning circuitry--Tivoli has provided a 3.5-millimeter output port.
Model Subwoofer At 6.5 inches high, 9.5 inches wide, and 6.1 inches deep, the Model Subwoofer is a bit larger than the other components in the Tivoli component system. While a 5.25-inch bass driver dominates the front of the unit, there's also a deep front port for added bass response. A bass-level dial lets you decide how much of the low end you want to hear. The on-off switch has a sensor that automatically activates the subwoofer when a signal is detected. With 20 watts of power, the Model Subwoofer is an impressive little box with the capability of dramatically extending the fullness and richness of the Model Two sound.
Model CD With its cherry wood casing, Tivoli's component CD player matches the Model Two perfectly while offering equally simple operation. We really liked the elegant slot-loading mechanism; it felt solid and reliable. Basic functions like play, stop, and track selection can be controlled on the unit. There's also a tiny little remote that adds shuffle, direct track selection, repeat, and intro-scanning functions. True to form, the remote is simple and easy to use. The Model CD's display is bright and crisp with the look of a high-end audiophile-class component. We played a number of CDs, including CD-R discs with nary a hitch. Tivoli says that the Model CD will not play CD-RW discs, however.
A 3.5-millimeter headset jack is provided on the back of the unit, as are RCA outputs and an AC power port that connects to a supplied brick-style AC adapter. The unit is also capable of running on DC power.
All Together Now Setting up the component system was fairly straightforward. All of the inputs and outputs are clearly marked, and each component ships with everything you need to make the right connections. Although it might be too much to ask for, it would be great if the Model Two main unit had an AC power input for plugging in at least one of the components. This is admittedly a minor quibble, and it might not be feasible in such a small device.
Just like our experiences with other Tivoli products, sound was impressive--full of clear highs and mids and rich, room-filling lows. The Model Two tuning feature felt less accurate than the Model One, but we still were able to dial in stations quickly and easily. Overall, we recommend the Model Two as a high-quality mini-component system, because systems this size rarely sound this good. Even without the subwoofer engaged, the sound was rich and resonant. As soon as we plugged in the subwoofer, though, we were transported to near sonic bliss. It's a must-have accessory for the Model Two.--Joshua Gunn
Pros
Simple, stylish construction on all the component parts
Great sound from such a compact system; good tuning accuracy
Subwoofer option adds exceptional dynamic range
Cons
Tuner is slightly less accurate than the Model One

these speakers are good little speakers. i have a single cab truck and they do the trick. they aren't the best things out there but you can't complain for thirty bucks. i'd definitely buy another set of these. now i just need a bazooka tube for the back. anyone have any input on those?

BIC America DV62si Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black) Review

BIC America DV62si Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black)

I was looking to replace my Boston Acoustics a60 pair after about 20 years of use. I read as many reviews as I could find on the internet and also looked at Consumers Report. I kind of narrowed it down to the JBL S26,Venturi DV62si and Polk r15. The DV62si won the competition. I auditioned each of the speakers and found the BIC pair to have a singularly beautiful sound especially for classical and jazz (which are my mainstays). I was pleasantly surprised by the bass response since CR said they were a bit "bass shy". I recommend highly. (I have my speakers on 12 inch stands.) Bravo BIC.

Attention, all bass lovers needing small speakers: this stately pair of Venturi DV62si bookshelf speakers from BIC America uses a patented and specially tuned rear-panel Venturi port to extend the its low-frequency response to an impressive 43 Hz, nearly a full octave below the capabilities of most bookshelf speakers--the place where kick drums kick and bass guitars growl their deepest. The 2-way speakers would suitably fill out your home theater with surround sound, enliven your dorm or apartment with music, or provide gentle background ambience in your bedroom or business.Use one pair for stereo or surround applications or pick up 2 pairs (4 speakers) for use as the front and surround elements in a multichannel listening system. The speakers are magnetically shielded for distortion-free placement near your television or computer monitor. Video programs sound more lifelike and enveloping with timbrally matched speakers all around, and plenty of newer music formats--from the DTS surround CD to DVD-Audio and SACD--offer music from your favorite artists mixed expressly for surround-sound listening. (Alternately, you could use these as surround speakers with larger, floorstanding speakers for the front left/right channels.)Standing just under 15 inches tall, the DV62si speakers each use a custom-designed .75-inch, ferrofluid-cooled dome tweeter for extended high frequencies and a 6-inch poly/graphite-blend woofer is light yet rigid for tight, accurate, and remarkably extended bass. What's in the Box Two speakers with grilles, a user's manual, and warranty information.
